The Pines of Mexico and Central America
Published in Hardcover by Timber Pr (April, 1991)
Average review score:

The best book on pines in many years.Perry's work could well serve as a model for other authors writing about trees. He clearly has a vast knowledge, based both on scholarly research and on field experience, of the world's most complex national pine flora. For each species, he presents a detailed description, a detailed description of its habitat, an excellent range map, several photographs (always in black-and-white, unfortunately), remarks on its taxonomic status (essential in light of the uncertain evolutionary relationships among Mexican pines), and a description of where the species may best be seen and exactly how to get there. This last feature will be particularly appreciated by anyone who has had the ambiguous pleasure of wandering around an unfamiliar country trying to find an unusual plant! I also appreciated the fact that Perry is not slow to point out that many of these pines are rare and that they may be in danger of extinction due to logging and habitat destruction. The two chapters dealing with this problem are a worthwhile read for anyone concerned about the loss of forest habitats due to population and development stresses in the Third World.

Platicas: Conversations With Hispano Writers of New Mexico
Published in Hardcover by Texas Technical University (March, 2000)
Average review score:

Great contribution to American literature & Hispanic studiesPlaticas: Conversations With Hispano Writers Of New Mexico is a unique collection of interviews with six remarkable, contemporary Hispanic writers (Rudolfo A. Anaya, Denise E. Chavez, Erlinda Gonzales-Berry, E.A. "Tony" Mares, Orlando Romero, Sabine R. Ulibarri) that, taken together, represent a seminal and informative sketch of New Mexican Hispanic intellectual and artistic history. Nasario Garcia's interviews elicited candid commentary and spontaneous conversations that reveal much about life experiences, the creative process, and the unique role that culture, tradition, and geography play in the literature that these writers have produced. Platicas is an outstanding, highly recommended contribution to students of American literature, and Hispanic studies.

Political Recruitment across Two Centuries : Mexico, 1884-1991
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (April, 1995)
Average review score:

Valuable resource for students of Mexican politicsThis text makes several important contributions. First, it integrates several sources of data and introduces a major new biographical data bank on Mexican politicians from 1884 through 1992 (as well as intellectuals, entrepreneurs, military officers, and Catholic bishops), which is accessible through SPSS. Second, it develops a sound theoretical basis for the exploration of the data, modifying the general literature on political recruitment to more accurately reflect the contradictions in Mexican situation in particular and in the developing world in general. The author focuses on gatekeepers, opportunity variables, and factors that propel a recruit into the higher ranks of politics. Extensive coverage is given to the role of student politics, military experience, age, and business careers in political recruitment. Third, it includes an innovative analysis of the roles of gender, class, and family connections in the Mexican political recruitment and promotional processes; it also gives serious consideration to opposition party politics. Finally, it reflects the extensive experience of a leading scholar in this field and offers a case study of the recent Salinas administration to exemplify the theoretical points made throughout the book. The book concludes with a valuable bibliographic essay

Politics of a Prison Riot: The 1980 New Mexico Prison Riot Its Causes and Aftermath
Published in Paperback by Rhombus Pub Co (May, 1986)
Average review score:

How politics interferes with safety in prisons...I have read everything about the Santa Fe prison riot, and many other books about prisons. This is by far the best I have read. Why? Because Dolph Saenz was there, and because he puts effectiveness ahead of ideology. Unlike the politicians and idealogues, Mr. Saenz put his [rear end] on the line to help end the riot peacufully.
The Santa Fe prison riot is one of the most fascinating events in American penal history. Unlike Attica, which involved deaths only in the re-taking of the prison, this involved inmate on inmate and inmate on guard violence throughout the entire seige. I've visited the prison and received a tour by guards who were there. It is truly mind-boggling in the scope of the violence that occured.
My film production company has optioned the rights to Mr. Saenz' life story. As a former policeman in Albuquerque and Latin America, Mr. Saenz has seen many exciting historical events unfold. He has always confronted threats to public safety with bravery, humor and patriotism. This book is his true account of the grisly results of what happens when an apathetic public, opportunistic politicians, and negligent security combine to allow an explosion of epic proportions. Do not for a minute think it won't happen again, if we remain ignorant of the conditions that exist in prisons all across America. Read this book to gain a greater understanding of the tragic miscalculations that are still taking place today.

Positivism in Mexico
Published in Unknown Binding by University of Texas Press ()
Average review score:

Its a classic of Mexican HistoryI believe Leopoldo Zea is the best contemporary thinker of Latin America. His work is truly massive. This book is his most complete work, and treats the development of the european positivist doctrines that dictated Mexico's destiny during several decades, and shows how this paradigm was unfit for that country's reality, so it led to the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Anyone that has an interest in Latin American history, particularly of Mexico, ought to read this book. I recomend it without reserves. A must for students and researchers. It is a classic by all means.

Pre-Columbian Art: Investigations and Insights
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (March, 1992)
Average review score:

A Must-Read for Students of Ancient and Modern MexicoThis book exemplifies Hildegard Delgado Pang's gift for sharing appreciation of both ancient and modern cultures. It is beautifully illustrated and includes detailed drawings by the author. While the research and documentation of ancient art is meticulous, the author does not neglect the connections between past and contemporary cultures. Her sensitivity to both brings depth to this subject that far surpasses the triviality of viewing artifacts as separate novelties.
